Hospice Care
Hospice care is a term used for the end-of-life care that is provided to a patient with a terminal illness. Rather than trying to cure a disease, the focus of hospice care is on enhancing the patient’s quality of life and making them as comfortable as possible as they approach their time. Hospice care considers the patient’s health holistically and works as a team with the patient’s doctors, caregivers, family, and other important people in their life. Hospice care focuses on pain management and other symptoms while also providing emotional, social, and spiritual support to the patient and their family. Good Whitehall, MT hospice care will do this while also making sure to respect the patient’s and their family’s wishes while upholding their dignity.
Timeline For Hospice Care
Every patient and their family is unique and different in what their exact needs will be and there is no one-size-fits-all timeline. Hospice care is typically recommended when a patient has an illness or condition that is no longer responding to curative treatment and when it has been established by a physician that a patient is likely to have six months or less to live. At this time, the focus typically turns to comfort care (hospice care) and making the patient as comfortable as possible rather than trying to continue to fight their condition with curative treatments. Other factors that go into determining when hospice care is needed is when a patient is having frequent hospital or emergency room visits, significant weight loss, significant decline in physical abilities, increased physical issues such as pain, nausea, breathing difficulties, etc., or other issues that cannot be handled without intensive symptom management.
