How Can A Hospice Volunteer Serve?
We have multiple opportunities for volunteers and offer flexible scheduling, so you can help as much or as little as you have time and capability.
Some of the patient support our volunteers provide includes:
Visiting our hospice patients. Often, people in hospice may not have as many friends or family around as they would like. Our volunteers pay home or hospital visits to our patients. Many may read, take walks, accompany hospice patients to appointments or outings, or participate in beloved activities or favorite hobbies.
If you have certain certifications, you may provide massage therapy or therapeutic touch therapies. Some hospice patients benefit from aromatherapy, music therapy, or pet therapy. We help you find a role that fits your talents and abilities.
Headwaters Hospice and Palliative Care also offers respite care for family caregivers. Volunteers may assist with shopping or other household tasks, alleviating some of the burdens from family caregivers. If you have the ability and training, you may also provide direct care in lieu of the family caregiver, allowing them to rest and recharge so they can continue positive care for their loved one. For hospice patients with pets, helping with pet care and walks is an important volunteer role.
For patients with younger children, there may be childcare volunteer opportunities available, including helping children to and from school, or providing escorts and transportation to school extracurriculars, sports practices and games, or outings.
Administrative and Support Volunteer Opportunities
Hospice volunteers work closely with our support and counseling staff. You may find fulfillment in helping support group facilitators, coordinating support group meetings, or communicating with families.
If you have administrative experience or are organized, then a volunteer role in our administrative side may be the best fit. You may help us raise awareness for hospice and palliative care, help with family rosters, and communicate (preparing newsletters and mailings, assisting with fundraisers, etc.).
